Chapter Fourteen
Knightley
To everyoneâs relief, the wedding goes smoothly. Bella prepared for every eventuality, but in the end nothing major goes wrongâit doesnât rain, everyone recalls exactly where they need to be, Rob remembers the rings, and the girls behave beautifully.
Even though, like Em, Iâm not a big fan of weddingsâand I doubt that if I were to tie the knot, Iâd do it like thisâI have to admit thereâs a magic to the day. Itâs the perfect location, overlooking the Pacific, which sparkles in the warm January sun. Itâs nice to see people I havenât laid eyes on in yearsâmembers of the Woodruff family who were so welcoming to me, John, and Rob when we first came, family friends like Noah King from the Ark just up the road with his wife and son, and others who either work at HWH or are connected to it in some way.
John and Bella stand quietly beside each other as the celebrant welcomes everyone to Hartfield and gives a general speech about the sanctity of marriage. âNo ceremony can create a marriage,â he explains, âonly the two of you can do that, through love and patience; through dedication and perseverance; through talking and listening, helping and supporting and believing in each other.â
My gaze drifts across to where Em is standing in the aisle, holding the hands of the two girls. As I watch, Lilibet pulls her dress, and Em bends and whispers to her, finishing with a kiss on her blonde hair before she straightens. She has infinite patience with the girls, and sheâs so good with them.
I couldnât believe it when I first saw her this morning. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times Iâve seen her wearing something other than shorts or jeans over the years. At her motherâs funeral, she wore black, and her grief overshadowed her beauty, because she was so pale and thin. Once or twice when thereâs been a party she might have worn a mini skirt or a short dress. But this is the first time sheâs ever worn anything like this.
The gown highlights her gentle curves, and because of the way her breasts move beneath the silky fabric, Iâm convinced sheâs not wearing a bra. Her hair has been curled and it bounces well past her shoulders, the first time Iâve seen it down in years. Her makeup is immaculate, with black eyeliner drawn out to wings either side of her eyes, smoky gray eyeshadow on her lids, and her lashes lengthened with mascara, which she never wears. She looks like a mature, beautiful woman, sexy and sophisticated. And I realized how foolish Iâve been in continuing to think of her as the girl I grew up with. Sheâs still that girl inside in many ways. But sheâs also changed. Sheâs had to look after her mother and help her father with his grief. To deal with her own issues with HD. And she also practically runs HWH, although sheâd never admit it.
